Uganda’s Victoria Pearls suffered a narrow six-wicket defeat to host nation Capricorn Eagles in a high-scoring encounter at the HP Oval on Monday afternoon during the ongoing Capricorn Series Quadrangular.

HIGH-STAKES TUSSLE: Action between the Victoria Pearls and Namibia during their second encounter at the HP Oval in Windhoek, a high-scoring contest that saw a combined 295 runs scored across both innings.

Despite an explosive late-innings surge in the death overs and a solid top-order foundation laid by skipper Janet Mbabazi, the Namibian side chased down Uganda’s total of 147/4 to secure victory with seven balls to spare.

After the Capricorn Eagles won the toss and sent Uganda in to bat, the Victoria Pearls faced early pressure, losing both opening batters Stephanie Nampiina (1) and Proscovia Alako (1) inside the powerplay to fall to 21/2.

GAME-CHANGING TALK: Victoria Pearls duo Immaculate Nakisuuyi and Esther Iloku have a mid-wicket conference during their crucial, unbroken 69-run fifth-wicket partnership against Namibia.

Captain Janet Mbabazi brought stability to the innings, scoring a patient 41 off 36 balls (3 fours, 1 six) while combining with Ritah Musamali (24 off 27 balls) for a crucial 54-run third-wicket stand.

When both batters fell in quick succession to Victoria Hamunyela (2/20), leaving Uganda at 78/4 in the 13th over, the innings required urgent acceleration.

Immaculate Nakisuuyi and Esther Iloku delivered precisely that, assembling an unbroken 69-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT: Namibia celebrates a wicket during their contest against Uganda’s Victoria Pearls at the HP Oval in Windhoek; spinner Victoria Hamunyela led the Namibian bowling attack with match-best figures of 2/20.

Nakisuuyi smashed a blistering 43* off just 22 deliveries – striking four boundaries and two maximums at a strike rate of 195.45 – while Iloku provided steady support with 25* off 23 balls to propel the Victoria Pearls to a competitive 147/4 in 20 overs.

Defending 147, Uganda got off to a bright start with the ball.

Phiona Egaru Kulume struck on the fourth ball of the innings to dismiss Namibian captain Sunè Wittmann (1), followed by a run-out of Mezerly Gorases (22) and Sarah Walaza clean-bowled Kayleen Green (0).

The sharp defensive effort left the Capricorn Eagles reeling at 29/3 after 3.5 overs.

However, Mekelaye Mwatile and Arrasta Diergaardt turned the tide with a match-winning 92-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

MATCH-WINNING STAND: Namibia’s Mekelaye Mwatile (49) and Arrasta Diergaardt (49*) in the middle during their game-turning 92-run fourth-wicket partnership against Uganda’s Victoria Pearls.

Both batters anchored the chase with identical scores of 49, with Mwatile scoring 49 off 48 balls (4 fours, 1 six) and Diergaardt finishing unbeaten on 49* off 40 balls (6 fours, 1 six).

Despite tight economic bowling from spinner Malisa Ariokot (0/15 in 4.0 overs, including 1 maiden) and a breakthrough by Asumin Akurut (1/25) to stump Mwatile at 121/4, Wilka Mwatile’s quickfire 16* off 9 balls ensured the Capricorn Eagles completed the chase, reaching 148/4 in 18.5 overs.
