The Victoria Pearls showcased immense grit and nerve to overcome a dramatic late-innings batting collapse, defeating Hong Kong, China by two wickets in a nail-biting Capricorn Series Quadrangular encounter at the FNB NCG.

After captain Janet Mbabazi won the toss and elected to field first, Uganda’s bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance to keep the opposition in check on a competitive surface.
Sarah Walaza provided the early breakthrough for the Victoria Pearls, removing Hong Kong captain Natasha Miles for 8 in the sixth over with a sharp catch by Proscovia Alako.

Medium pacer Asumin Akurut then bowled Shanzeen Shanzeen for 7 shortly after, reducing Hong Kong to 32/2 in the eighth over.
Mariko Hill anchored the innings for the Asian side, playing a patient knock to top-score with 37 off 42 deliveries, hitting one six.

She formed a steady partnership with Kary Chan, who scored 16 off 20 balls with two boundaries.
However, Uganda struck back decisively in the 15th over when Alako executed a brilliant run-out to dismiss Hill, and Walaza clean-bowled Chan just two balls later, leaving Hong Kong reeling at 80/4.
Marina Lamplough injected crucial late firepower for the batting side, smashing an aggressive 20 off just 12 balls – featuring three crisp boundaries – at a strike rate of 166.67 before falling to Irene Mutonyi in the final over.

Mutonyi also claimed the wicket of Joyleen Kaur Dhaliwal (0), and Akurut ran out Mahek Kaur (1) on the final delivery, restricting Hong Kong, China to 114/7 at the end of their 20 overs.
Both Walaza and Mutonyi finished with identical standout bowling figures of 2/22 across their four-over spells.

Chasing a modest target of 115 for victory, the Victoria Pearls suffered an immediate setback when captain Janet Mbabazi was caught off Kary Chan for 1 in the very first over.
Proscovia Alako walked in and displayed fearless aggression, striking a brisk 14 off 9 balls – including a four and a six – to get the scoreboard moving before being run out in the fifth over with the score at 28/2.

Opener Stephanie Nampiina steadied the ship with a measured 20 off 24 balls, striking three boundaries, before being caught behind off Joyleen Kaur Dhaliwal in the ninth over.
With the score at 50/3, Ritah Musamali took charge of the chase, playing an anchoring role to top-score for Uganda with 22 off 26 deliveries.

She was supported by Esther Iloku, who added a brisk 12 off 10 balls, helping push the total to 79 before both fell to Dhaliwal and Marina Lamplough respectively by the 13th over.
Immaculate Nakisuuyi then launched a counter-attack, smashing 19 off just 15 balls with three boundaries to bring Uganda within touching distance of the target at 104/5 in the 16th over.

Just as the victory seemed routine, the match took a dramatic turn.
Lamplough dismissed Nakisuuyi, and Hong Kong’s Mahek Kaur then produced a sensational double-wicket maiden over, having Malisa Ariokot caught behind for 11 and clean-bowling Sarah Walaza for a duck without conceding a single run.
In the span of just seven deliveries, Uganda stumbled from 104/5 to 107/8, still needing eight runs to win with only two wickets in hand.

Walking in at number eight under immense pressure, Asumin Akurut spectacularly held her nerve.
Displaying remarkable composure and power, Akurut smashed an unbeaten 10 off just 5 balls – highlighted by a match-winning six – at a massive strike rate of 200.00.
With Consylate Aweko holding down the other end (0 not out off 1 ball), Akurut carried the Victoria Pearls over the finish line, sealing a thrilling two-wicket victory in 17.4 overs with 14 balls to spare.
