MCA Colts XI vs. Uganda XI

Adani Stadium, Dahanu – Maharashtra

T20 Match, 8:30am

Bold Blade. Olipa whipped, punched and drove his way to a sparkling half-century that briefly tilted the contest backx toward Uganda.

THANE, MAHARASHTRA – MAY 26. Uganda XI suffered their first defeat of the Mumbai Tour but emerged with significant credit after pushing experienced Indian franchise outfit SoBo Mumbai Falcons to a dramatic one-wicket victory in the opening T20 match at Dadoji Konddev Stadium earlier today.

Despite defending a modest total of 112 on a difficult surface, the Cricket Cranes came within touching distance of an unlikely victory before Falcons captain Akash Parkar held his nerve to steer the hosts to 118 for nine with five balls remaining.

The defeat ended Uganda’s unbeaten run on tour following their dominant 4-0 sweep over MCA Colts XI in the 50-over series, but coach Steve Tikolo’s side once again demonstrated the competitiveness and resilience that has increasingly defined this developing national side.

Olipa counterattack

Uganda’s innings appeared headed for collapse almost immediately after SoBo Mumbai Falcons won the toss and elected to field first under bowling-friendly morning conditions.

Simon Ssesazi fell in the opening over before wicketkeeper-batter Sarvesh Patil departed soon after, leaving Uganda reeling at 10 for two inside two overs.

Lost Toss. Uganda captain Fred Achelam didn’t call right at the toss and he was duly asked to bat first on a tough surface.

With the Mumbai seamers extracting movement and uneven bounce from the surface, the innings needed composure and aggression in equal measure – and young Gerald Olipa delivered both brilliantly.

The former Uganda U-19 captain produced a sparkling 52 off just 30 balls, striking eight boundaries and one six in a fearless counter-attacking innings that temporarily shifted momentum back toward Uganda.

Olipa combined elegant strokeplay with calculated aggression against both seam and spin, helping Uganda recover from the early collapse and briefly raising hopes of a competitive total.

Ronald Lutaaya added 17 while several middle-order batters made starts without converting them as Uganda were eventually bowled out for 112 in 17.2 overs.

Falcons spinner Kavya Gori starred with the ball, taking three wickets for just 12 runs, while Mumbai domestic all-rounder Akash Parkar and Nikhil Giri claimed two wickets apiece.

Olipa later admitted the surface demanded patience and adaptability.

“First things first, it is always a great pleasure to play for your country and it is even better when you travel this long — three hours — to play a game for your country,” Olipa said.

“Our batsmen collapsed pretty quickly and we didn’t get the runs we desired. I came in and tried to score for my team and get a score we could defend but the wicket was very tough to bat on. It was slow and turning a lot. The opposition was strong too.”

Superb With The Ball. SoBo Mumbai Falcons stifled, strangled and suffocated the Cricket Cranes for runs enroute to bowling them out for 112 runs at the beautiful Dadoji Konddev Stadium in Thane

Falcons tested

Although the target looked modest, Uganda’s bowlers quickly transformed the contest into a tense arm wrestle against one of Mumbai’s strongest emerging franchise sides.

The Falcons lineup included several players with serious domestic pedigree, most notably captain Akash Parkar — a seasoned Mumbai all-rounder with Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and T20 Mumbai League experience.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Mulchandani and left-hander Gautam Wagehla initially appeared to put the hosts on course for a comfortable chase as Falcons raced to 68 for four.

Wagehla struck 31 off 16 balls while Mulchandani blasted 10 off six deliveries before Uganda’s bowlers tightened their grip.

Juma Miyaji and Cosmas Kyewuta each claimed two wickets while left-arm spinner Henry Ssenyondo bowled a superb spell of two for 13 in four overs.

Finger spinner Joseph Baguma also struck twice as Uganda repeatedly clawed back into the contest.

The Falcons eventually slipped from 78 for four to 98 for nine as panic spread through the home dressing room and the fair crowd sensed an unlikely Uganda victory.

However, Parkar’s experience ultimately proved decisive.

The Falcons captain absorbed pressure calmly before finishing unbeaten on 36 off 40 balls to guide the hosts home in the final over.

Uganda believed they had removed him earlier when Sarvesh Patil claimed a catch behind off Baguma, but the appeal was turned down — a moment that proved critical in the outcome.

“We could have given their captain more singles so that we bowl at the tailenders, but he held his end,” Olipa reflected.

“We also put him down and he was lucky with one particular decision when we all felt we had him caught behind.”

Last Men. Pace bowlers Cosmas Kyewuta and Juma Miyaji were the last pair for the Cricket Cranes in an insipid batting show against SoBo Mumbai Falcons.

Costly chances

Coach Steve Tikolo pointed directly to missed opportunities in the field as the decisive factor behind Uganda’s narrow defeat.

“But we put down two catches — one at point Ronald Lutaaya was guilty and the left-hander went on to score an extra 10 to 15 runs,” Tikolo said.

“The second one (put down by Charles Musemeza off captain Parkar at the deep square leg boundary) would have won us the match. Catches win matches.”

Uganda captain Fred Achelam nevertheless praised the fighting spirit shown by his side on a difficult wicket against quality opposition.

“It wasn’t an easy game for either side. It had a lot to say about the way the wicket played,” Achelam said.

“Despite us losing, I am happy the guys fought to the very end against some good players who have also earned stripes in the Ranji Trophy.”

“112 is not a big score but we made a fist of the fight when they came to chase. T20 is a momentum game and we have to work to bounce back strong.”

Not Fruitful. Uganda’s opening pair of Simon Ssesazi and Raghav Dhawan suffered a rare no-show on this tour.

Learning curve

Uganda rested senior all-rounders Alpesh Ramjani and Dinesh Nakrani for the match, allowing younger players additional opportunities in difficult conditions ahead of upcoming ICC assignments later this year.

The performance once again highlighted the growing depth within the Cricket Cranes setup, particularly the emergence of younger talents such as Olipa and Anas Baig among others.

Although the unbeaten tour run ended in Thane, Uganda’s ability to push a seasoned Mumbai franchise side to the brink underlined the value of the exposure tour as preparations continue for the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B in Tanzania and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifiers in Nigeria.

Uganda will now look to level the T20 series in the second match tomorrow.
