Mumbai Tour Reveals Uganda's Next Frontier

Uganda's Mumbai tour ended with a seven-wicket defeat to Triumph Knights NE at the MCA Recreation Centre, handing the hosts a 3-1 T20 series victory. However, the Cricket Cranes return home with plenty of positives after winning the overall eight-match white-ball series 5-3, highlighted by a dominant 4-0 sweep in the 50-over format. Juma Miyaji's three-wicket burst and valuable lessons in demanding Indian conditions underscored another important step in Uganda's preparations for future ICC tournaments.

BANDRA. Uganda’s historic Tour of Mumbai ended in defeat but not without another display of resilience as the Triumph Knights NE secured a seven-wicket victory at the MCA Recreation Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex on Saturday.

The result handed the hosting Mumbai Premier League T20 franchises a 3-1 T20 Series triumph but could not erase Uganda’s outstanding achievements earlier in the tour, where the Cricket Cranes swept the 50-over series 4-0 to finish the eight-match white-ball tour with an impressive 5-3 overall record.

Collapse Undermines Bright Start

Asked to bat first after losing the toss under searing Mumbai heat approaching 40 degrees Celsius, Uganda began positively through Simon Ssesazi, whose aggressive 18 off 12 balls carried the visitors to 22 without loss.

However, the Triumph Knights pace attack responded ruthlessly. Uganda collapsed from 22 without loss to 40 for six as Aishwary Surve and Minad Manjrekar exploited local conditions expertly.

Joseph Baguma fought bravely for a team-high 21 while Juma Miyaji contributed 12 in a seventh-wicket stand that briefly stemmed the slide, but Uganda were eventually dismissed for 70 in 16.2 overs.

Miyaji Sparks Hope

Despite defending only 70, Uganda refused to surrender.

Fast bowler Juma Miyaji produced another spirited spell, removing Jigar Rana, captain Akhil Herwadkar and Sagar Mishra to leave Triumph Knights momentarily uncomfortable in pursuit of the modest target.

His figures of 3 for 21 reflected Uganda’s fighting spirit throughout the tour.

However, wicketkeeper-batsman Vedant Murkar counterattacked magnificently, smashing an unbeaten 45 off 22 deliveries, including seven boundaries and one six, to guide the hosts home in only 8.5 overs.

Good Signs. Sarvesh Patil (L) and Simon Ssesazi put on 22 for the opening stand before the Cricket Cranes wobbled to 40 for 6 and 70 all out eventually.

Building For Bigger Challenges

Cricket Cranes coach Steve Tikolo viewed the tour as another important step in Uganda’s development pathway.

“Tough day in the office. The boys have put in the hard yards to play in such conditions of 40 degrees Celsius,” Tikolo said.

“We didn’t bat well but the attitude was right with the ball with three wickets. We have played eight tough games and we have enough lessons to take back home and continue to improve as we gear up for the ICC tournaments and International League (IL T20).”

“We have to continue our preparations with that in mind. Some seniors have done well and youngsters coming into the squad are continuing to find their feet. It is important we add another set of bricks on the foundation laid.”

Captain Fred Achelam echoed the coach’s assessment.

“It’s been a good tour. We came, saw and most of all we learnt,” Achelam said.

“We lost the toss and they asked us to bat and made the most of their conditions. The target we set of 71, we fought to make a good game out of it.”

Mission Mumbai Over. Five wins from eight matches, a 4-0 50-over sweep and invaluable experience in Indian conditions made the tour one of Uganda’s most productive overseas assignments.

“For the whole tour, we have done well to win five out of eight matches. It has been all about going with the processes and then we always wanted to tick that box and let the results take care of themselves.”

Uganda now return home encouraged by valuable experience gained in demanding Indian conditions as preparations continue for future ICC events and other international assignments.
