Light Secondary School were crowned champions of the Eastern Region Girls’ Schools Cricket Week Qualifiers 2026 after a commanding seven-wicket victory over the regional power house Olila High School in the final.
In a remarkable turn of events, Light SS once again rose to the occasion to clinch the regional title, echoing their 2024 triumph and reaffirming their dominance in the region as they avenged their earlier group stage loss to Olila.
Earlier, Olila High School, batting first, were bowled out for 62 in 18.4 overs.
Lucky Agwang and Devine Gabriella Nyamer top-scored with 14 runs apiece, but the side struggled to build lasting partnerships against a disciplined Light SS bowling attack.
Zita Acan and Sarah Tino led the charge with two wickets each, supported well by Teddy Anyait and Ritah Alio to keep Olila under constant pressure.
Chasing 63, Light SS paced their innings steadily despite a few hiccups.
Ritah Alio (18) and Susan Akidi (16) laid the foundation before Ruth Kulume’s unbeaten 16 guided the team home, alongside Joyce Mary Arugo, as they reached 63/3 in 17.2 overs.
Devine Gabriella Nyamer put up a spirited all-round performance for Olila, picking up three wickets, but it was not enough to deny Light SS victory.
Her efforts earned her the Player of the Match award.
This shocking loss unfolded in the presence of Professor Deogracious Olila, proprietor of Olila High School, as Light Secondary School secured a memorable victory to be crowned Eastern Region Girls’ Schools Cricket Week Qualifiers champions.

The last time they reached the nationals as regional champions, they lifted the national crown a feat they will be eager to replicate.
Both schools in the final, Light SS and Olila High School, have now secured national qualification, while Soroti SS will face Bishop Maraka College from Kumi in a third-place playoff tomorrow at Madera Ground, starting at 10:00 AM.
The winner will claim the third Eastern Region spot.
The Kumi District qualifiers featured Bishop Maraka College, Wiggins SS, and Bishop Illukor College, with all games played at Bishop Maraka College grounds.
Eastern Regional Development Officer Emmanuel Isaanez praised the talent on display:
It is truly inspiring to witness the remarkable talent and enthusiasm displayed by these young girls representing their schools at the regional level.
Their dedication, skill, and sportsmanship reflect the growing strength of girls’ cricket in the Eastern region and beyond.
Tournaments like these create memories that will last a lifetime and nurture a new generation of cricket ambassadors for their schools and communities.
Light SS and Olila High School have consistently performed at a high level, and tomorrow Soroti SS and Bishop Maraka College will compete for the third qualifying spot.
As the Regional Development Officer, I am committed to expanding the scope of cricket activities, introducing the sport to more districts and schools, and raising the standard of competition so that future tournaments will be even bigger and more exciting.
