MOROGORO, TANZANIA – It was a tough start for Uganda’s representatives on day one of the FEASSA 2026 Cricket Competition at the SUA Academy Ground on 14th August, Friday.

Busoga College Mwiri and Sacred Heart Secondary School Gulu suffered opening-day setbacks at the hands of their Tanzanian hosts.

However, with little time to dwell, both squads step back onto the park today, Monday, August 17, determined to steady the ship and claim their first victories of the tournament.

Masechu outmuscle Mwiri in high-scoring opener

In the boys’ division, Busoga College Mwiri (UG) found themselves on the wrong side of a 24-run defeat against a clinical Masechu (TZ) side.

Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Masechu laid a formidable foundation, amassing 151/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

The bedrock of their innings was a brilliant, aggressive half-century from Johnson David, who struck 59 off 44 balls, complemented by a patient 37 from Khush Pandya.

Mwiri’s bowling unit fought valiantly to restrict the late overs, led by skipper Jordan Okecho (2/22) and Okoth Joel (2/27), who produced key breakthroughs.

In reply, Mwiri’s chase faltered early, slumping to 49/3 by the 8th over.

Top-order contributions from Luyuyo Isabariye (20) and Martin Kisubi (18) provided brief momentum, but it was Okoth Joel who led the counter-attack, top-scoring with a defiant 35 off 29 balls.

Despite his efforts, Masechu’s bowling attack – spearheaded by lethal spells from Alfred Daniel (4/11) and match-winner Johnson David (4/14) – dismantled the lower order, bowling Mwiri out for 127 in 18.1 overs.

ON TOUR: Sacred Heart Secondary School Gulu in Morogoro, Tanzania, for the 2026 FEASSA Games at the SUA Academy Ground.

Sacred Heart edged by Morogoro in low-scoring thriller

Over in the girls’ category, Sacred Heart Secondary School Gulu (UG) engaged in a tense, low-scoring tussle against Morogoro (TZ), eventually succumbing to a 4-wicket loss.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Sacred Heart struggled to find fluency against a disciplined Tanzanian attack.

Skipper Amono Nyero anchored the innings with a patient 24 off 38 deliveries, while Lakica Okema contributed a vital 13.

However, Winfrida Mohamed’s destructive spell of 3/12 triggered a collapse, leaving Sacred Heart all out for 78 in 18.3 overs.

Defending a modest target, the Ugandan girls refused to go down without a fight.

Early strikes from Angwech Dorothy Diana (1/11) and Hanifa Noreen (1/16) threw Morogoro into disarray at 9/1, and subsequent wickets from Akidi Petra (1/23) and Lakica Okema (1/5) kept the game on a knife-edge.

However, a quickfire 29 off 21 balls from Morogoro skipper Lightness Yona tilted the scales, allowing the hosts to reach 80/6 in 14.3 overs and seal the win.

Both teams return to the SUA Academy Ground today for crucial second-round matchups, looking to turn their campaign around.
