Cricket Uganda has achieved a historic milestone, winning two major honours in the Africa Region categories of the 2025 ICC Development Awards and officially advancing to the final global voting pool.
The double continental victory recognises Cricket Uganda’s impact beyond traditional competition, using cricket as a vehicle for post-conflict healing, public health, and multi-generational inclusion.
The two regional winning initiatives advancing to the global stage are:
- ICC Development Initiative of the Year: Girls’ Schools Cricket Week in Gulu
In May 2025, Cricket Uganda staged the 21st Sky View Girls’ Schools Cricket Week in Gulu City, marking the first time the tournament was hosted in Northern Uganda. Sixteen schools converged at the Northern Cricket Hub, and host ground Gulu High School, where Olila High School ultimately claimed the national crown.
- Cricket 4 Good Social Impact Initiative of the Year: The “Cricket Grannies” of Jinja
In October 2025, Coach Aaron Kusaasira organized a unique tournament for 56 elderly women at Kivubuka Primary School Grounds in Jinja. Playing across four teams—Kusasira, Hope, Kivubuka, and Faith—the participants used friendly cricket matches to combat hypertension and promote active lifestyles.
“Taking a flagship national tournament to Gulu was a deliberate, strategic decision to break geographic barriers and redefine our development footprint. To see that courage validated on a global scale proves our pathway works. We aren’t just expanding the map for talent; we are demonstrating that our structures can spark sustainable growth and inclusion anywhere in the country,” said Davis Turinawe, Development Manager, Cricket Uganda.
“These continental awards underscore the profound societal equity that cricket carries when executed with vision. By combining innovative grassroots initiatives with broad digital visibility and international media partnerships, we have shifted the narrative of sports administration. This global recognition affirms that Ugandan cricket is not only growing the game, but also pioneering sport as a catalyst for deep social transformation,” added Denis Musali, Honorary Secretary, Cricket Uganda.
Next Steps
Having conquered the Africa Region, Cricket Uganda’s dual entries will now be reviewed by an independent global panel of former international players, media representatives, and ICC stakeholders.
The final global winners will be officially announced on ICC platforms in July.
