Cricket Uganda has launched a two‑week nationwide capacity-building initiative, reaching schools and districts across the country to strengthen grassroots cricket.

The program has already taken root in Busoga, Masaka, Lango, and Bunyoro, and is set to expand to eleven more regions this coming weekend.

By targeting district sports officers and primary school teachers, the initiative ensures that cricket development is embedded at the community level, creating a sustainable pathway for future talent.

The rollout has been carefully structured, with experienced tutors leading sessions at key venues across Uganda.

From Kampala‑Wakiso to Gulu High School in Acholi, each region is receiving tailored training.

This approach guarantees consistency in how cricket is introduced and nurtured, while also empowering local leaders to take ownership of the sport’s growth.

Sadam Oyaga, who spearheaded the Busoga program, reflected on the impact of the training:

We had a capacity building for Busoga region on 21st February 2026 at Jinja Senior Secondary School. It was coaching for district sports officers and primary teachers in Busoga district. We coached them the foundation certificate as coaches and umpires. Thirteen DSOs were available and thirteen teachers making it 26 participants.

Development Manager Davis Turinawe emphasised the strategic importance of the initiative, saying:

This program is about empowering educators and sports officers to take ownership of cricket development in their communities. It also aligns with the National Council of Sports requirement that federations achieve at least 70% coverage across the country. Expanding into more regions is, therefore not only a vision for growth but a necessity to meet national standards and ensure inclusivity.

CEO Evelyn K.B. Shinyekwa added;

Capacity building is central to our mission of making cricket popular across Uganda. By investing in people, we are ensuring that the sport becomes part of everyday life in schools and districts, creating opportunities for young players to grow talent and shine both locally and internationally. Meeting the NCS benchmark is part of our responsibility as a federation, and this program demonstrates our commitment to fulfilling that mandate.
