The opening day of the Great Lakes Men’s T20 at Lugogo Cricket Oval delivered two contrasting encounters, with Bunyonyi Warriors sealing a comfortable win in the morning before Kyoga Avengers claimed a dramatic Super Over victory in the afternoon thriller.

In the morning fixture, Victoria Strikers opted to bat first but struggled to build consistent partnerships. Simon Ssesazi (12) fell early, followed by quick dismissals of Perry Wazombe (20) and Robert Ajuna (0), leaving the innings under pressure.

Kenneth Waiswa provided the much-needed spark with a quick 24 off 9 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six to lift the scoring rate.

Christopher Kidega (17) and Jaffer Ochaya (18) added useful contributions, while Emmanuel Twijukye’s unbeaten 13 helped push the Strikers to 116 for 9 in 20 overs.

He received support from Jonathan Nyiiro and Tendo Rayan, who also chipped in with key breakthroughs.

Fred Achelam (22) supported the chase before Kyewuta Cosmas finished the job with an unbeaten 29 off 10 balls, guiding Bunyonyi to 118 for 5 in 16.3 overs.

Despite Perry Wazombe’s two wickets for 15 runs, the target proved insufficient for the Strikers.

The afternoon encounter between Mburo Blasters and Kyoga Avengers produced a high-scoring classic filled with momentum swings and late drama. Mburo Blasters, after electing to bat first, posted a strong total of 176 all out in 19.4 overs.

Fahad Mutagana (42 off 19) and Charles Musemeza (25 off 17) gave the innings a flying start, while Riazat Ali Shah added 31 off 19 deliveries.

Gerald Olipa led the attack with 3 wickets, ensuring Mburo did not cross an even bigger total.

In response, Kyoga Avengers matched the intensity from the outset. Ronald Lutaaya (24) and Cyrus Kakuru (37) provided stability at the top, before Robert Owili produced a stunning counterattack, smashing 45 off just 20 balls to tilt the chase in Kyoga’s favour. Junaid Khan (25) and Ismail Munir (23*) kept the momentum going as the chase went down to the wire.

Mburo’s bowlers fought back strongly, with Hamid Munigwa taking 3 wickets and Sowobi Yunus claiming 2, but Kyoga held their nerve to also finish on 176 for 10 after 20 overs, forcing a Super Over.

In the Super Over, Kyoga Avengers held their composure to edge Mburo Blasters in a dramatic finish, sealing one of the most thrilling wins of the tournament so far.

Robert Owili’s explosive innings stood out as the defining performance of the match, earning him the Player of the Match award in a contest full of twists and high drama.
