The race to the Girls Schools Cricket Week Nationals 2026 is heating up, with the Northern Region qualifiers now concluded and the final four schools officially confirmed.
Sacred Heart Secondary School emerged as champions of the Northern Regional Girls Schools Cricket Week Qualifiers (GSCWQ) 2026, producing a disciplined all-round performance to defend a modest total against Masindi Secondary School in the final held at St. Joseph’s College Layibi.
In a repeat of last year’s script, Sacred Heart not only retained their regional crown but also head into the nationals as Northern Region champions, underlining their growing dominance in schools girls’ cricket.

Batting first in the final, Sacred Heart posted 100/7 in 20 overs, an innings built more on resilience than attacking flair.
Ritah Amono Nyero scored 15 runs, while Patricia Anek Ambrose contributed a steady 18 in the middle order.
Despite regular wickets disrupting momentum, Sacred Heart kept scoring
Masindi SS delivered a disciplined bowling performance, led by Peace Ninsima, who claimed an impressive three-wicket haul.
In response, Masindi SS struggled to establish partnerships as Sacred Heart’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure from the outset.
Early wickets inside the powerplay left the chase in disarray.
Safina Kyosaba anchored the innings with a patient 12 not out, while Shalot Akugizibwe offered some resistance with 19.
However, the required run rate continued to climb, and regular wickets ensured the target remained out of reach.
Sacred Heart’s bowling attack shared the workload effectively, with Hanifa Noreen picking up two key wickets, while Petra Akidi and Joyce Lakica also chipped in.
Sharp fielding, highlighted by multiple run-outs, further dented Masindi’s hopes.
Masindi SS eventually closed on 76/7 in 20 overs, handing Sacred Heart a 24-run victory and the Northern Regional title.
The win secures Sacred Heart Secondary School’s place at the national stage, capping a campaign defined by discipline, teamwork, and composure under pressure.
Speaking after the tournament, Northern Region Development Officer Grace Mutyagaba praised the growth of the game in the region:
The schools have played good cricket over the past few weeks, and we are hopeful of strong performances at the nationals.
The game continues to grow, with new entrants like St. Mary’s Ediofe Girls’ Secondary School from Arua joining the qualifiers.
This reflects our progress in expanding cricket in line with National Council of Sports (NCS) requirements.
We also thank Cricket Uganda and the schools for supporting these athletes.
A total of five schools featured in the Northern Regional qualifiers: Gulu High School, Sacred Heart SS, Masindi SS, St Theresa Girls SS, and St. Mary’s Ediofe Girls’ Secondary School, all progressing through district-level competitions.
