The Nile Region Girls Schools Cricket Week qualifiers 2026 concluded today in Jinja, with Jinja Senior Secondary School emerging as champions after a spirited victory against Iganga SS in the final.
The match capped off an exciting week of competition that showcased the growing strength of girls’ cricket in the Busoga region.
From a competitive pool of ten schools, four managed to secure a qualification to the national stage.
The schools that earned their place at the national Girls Schools Cricket Week are Jinja SSS, Iganga S.S, St James S.S, and Good Heart S.S.
Regional Development Officer (RDO) Eastern Region, Sadam Oyaga, praised the schools for their commitment and emphasised the importance of these qualifiers in preparing for the national competition.
He noted the significance of the event in building pathways for young athletes.
We had our Nile Region Girls Cricket Week qualifiers 2026 after our Easter series. These qualifiers are played by schools in the Busoga region from different districts as we prepare for the national girls schools cricket week that will be played in Gulu next month. In our region, 10 schools competed amongst themselves and only 4 managed to qualify for nationals. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the schools that participated and also thank Cricket Uganda for organising the schools qualifiers.
Oyaga further highlighted the upcoming grassroots event that will continue to build momentum for cricket in the region.
Up next is the Jinja Mini Cricket Festival that will be held on Saturday at Spire Road Primary School. As the RDO, I would like both the boys and girls to play as many tournaments as we can so that we nurture more talent for the nation.
The National Girls Schools Cricket Week are scheduled for next month in Gulu and will bring together the best teams from across Uganda.
Attention now turns to the Jinja District Mini Cricket Festival slated for Saturday, 11th April 2026 at Spire Road Primary School.
