The playground of Gulu Prison Primary School was buzzing with excitement as eight schools gathered for the much-anticipated Northern Region Third-Term Mini Cricket Tournament.

The eight teams that took part in the tournament included; Gulu Prison Primary School, Gulu Baptist Primary School, Negri Boys Primary School, Gulu Primary School, Gulu Public Primary School, Labor Line Primary School, St. Joseph’s Primary School, and Layibi Primary Community Team and all arrived with high hopes of lifting the trophy.

However, persistent rain refused to relent, making play impossible and presenting the organizers with a tricky dilemma.

With cricket action off the table, a coin toss was used to decide the day’s champions—a rare twist that underscored both the unpredictability of outdoor sports and the determination to crown winners despite the weather.

When the results were announced, the young cricketers received their accolades with pride, celebrating their achievements under unusual circumstances.

In the boys’ categories, Gulu Baptist Primary School dominated, claiming both the U-11 and U-13 titles.

On the girls’ side, Gulu Prison Primary School emerged victorious in the U-11 category, while Gulu Public Primary School took home the U-13 crown.

Though the rain may have dampened the action, the tournament remained a celebration of school spirit and youthful enthusiasm for cricket.

Teachers, parents, and supporters cheered the champions, who will carry their honor until the next term.

Northern Region Cricket Hub head coach Ivan Kagoda noted, “We are happy that we had our young stars in action and this tournament reminded us that sportsmanship and resilience extend beyond the pitch.

Sometimes, even a simple coin toss can create champions.”

He added, “This tournament allows us to identify upcoming stars, and we remain committed to growing the game in the region.”
