The Baby Cricket Cranes suffered a tough start to their ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifiers campaign, falling to Tanzania by 73 runs at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos.

Uganda U-19 won the toss and elected to field, hoping to capitalize on early morning conditions. Uganda’s bowlers, led by Majid and Abdul Aziz Tandia with three wickets each, worked hard to contain the opposition. Despite this effort, at least 10 dropped catches and missed run-out opportunities proved costly, with Uganda conceding 21 extras. Tanzania posted a competitive 189/8 in their 50 overs, setting Uganda a challenging target.

In response, Uganda’s batting faltered early, with captain Gerald Olipa departing for just 11 runs. Devansh Patel battled hard, scoring 25 off 84 balls, but lacked the necessary support to stabilize the chase. Tanzanian bowlers Bakrania and Hamza Ally Onai dismantled Uganda’s lineup, taking four wickets each, restricting Uganda to 116 all out in 39 overs.

With this loss, Uganda must quickly regroup as they face Kenya in their next fixture—a must-win encounter to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
