Excitement is building across Uganda’s youth cricket scene as the regional qualifiers for the Boys’ Schools Cricket Week 2026 draw closer to an end.
With an expanded 20-team national showcase set to feature the country’s top young talent, 19 schools across Cricket Uganda’s five official development regions – Central, Eastern, Northern, Western, and South Western – have officially secured their tickets, leaving only one slot open to complete the national roster.
In the Northern region, host heavyweights St. Joseph’s College, Layibi capped off a dominant campaign to seal their place at the nationals alongside Gulu High School and Lango College School.
Layibi demonstrated their prowess early in the qualifiers with a resounding 103-run victory over Gulu Army Secondary School, posting 132/5 behind Okot Kofi Anann’s 61 runs before Gerald Rubangenyo bagged 4 wickets for just 5 runs to bowl out the opposition for 29.
Layibi then sealed their regional top spot with a 34-run win against Gulu High School, driven by an explosive 51 off 27 balls from captain Ronald Rubangakene and a 3-wicket haul from Eric Odoch.
Over in the Eastern region, final action was equally intense at the Jinja SSS Cricket Ground, where St. James’ Secondary School edged out regional rivals Kiira College, Butiki by 8 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain-affected 10-over thriller.
Despite double-wicket efforts from Butiki’s Elisa Gamusi, St. James posted 54/8 and defended it tightly, holding Butiki to 47/3 through disciplined spells from Jagrat Patel and Evra Musasizi.
Both sides advanced to the national showpiece as part of a strong Eastern delegation that also includes defending champions Busoga College Mwiri, Jinja SS, Goodheart SS, Olila High School, and Soroti SS.
Meanwhile, the South Western qualifiers concluded at the Masaka SS Cricket Ground with the hosts putting on a clinical display to outclass Ntare School by 6 wickets.
Masaka’s bowling attack, led by Edrine Moya Mukisa with 4/25 and Eria Kasule with an astonishing 3/1, bundled Ntare out for 92 runs before Fabious Katumba anchored the successful run chase with 25 runs to send both schools through to the final tournament.
Completing the lineup, the Central region will be represented by Ndejje Senior Secondary School, St. John’s High School Kauga, Shree Sahajanand School, and Uganda Martyrs College Ssonde.
In the Western region, traditional powerhouses Nyakasura School lead the charge alongside Kasese Secondary School and Rwenzori High School.
With 19 slots locked in across all five development regions, anticipation is high for the final confirmation of the 20th team.
The Boys’ Schools Cricket Week will be hosted by Nyakasura School, slated for 22nd August to 29th August 2026.
