Due to the presence of giants South Africa, a top finish was never guaranteed for Team Uganda at the ICC Africa Senior Women’s Twenty20 Championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The South Africans finished on top of the pile with an unbeaten record. But Uganda will return home this morning as winners after they defeated home side Tanzania by 15 runs in the second-place decider yesterday afternoon.
Having elected to bat at the University of Dar es Salaam Oval, coach Davis Turinawe’s charges set 69 for the loss of eight wickets. At 7.1 overs, the side was 15 for 3 but Kevin Apio’s anchored the innings with a 52-ball 21 to ensure the bowlers had a competitive score to bowl to.
The trio of Carol Namugenyi, Franklyn Najjumba and Prico Nakitende snared a wicket apiece for a total of 12 runs as Tanzania’s batters struggled to match the required rate. At the end of 20 overs, Tanzania was stranded at 54-6. Justin Musubiika (1/13) took the match award.
