Uganda’s senior Men national team, the Cricket Cranes has been flagged off to Muscat, Oman.
The team will take part in the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cricket League (WCL) Division III in a bid to earn division II promotion.
The tourney is scheduled to take place from November 7-21. which determines the qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
The side will be under the guidance of Coach Steve Tikolo.
Uganda will play five matches in a round-robin format with an aim of finishing among the top two – who will progress to Division II scheduled for April 2019 in Namibia.
The team was flagged off on Friday
Uganda’s positioning then will decide its fate as either a First Class or One Day International (ODI) nation. “We have given these guys a platform to deliver,” said Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) chairman Bashir ‘Badu’ Ansasiira.
He added: “We are a growing cricketing nation, and our preparations have involved a number of tours that will help these guys play without stage fright. We are confident in them and wish them the very best.”
Ansasiira also welcomed Endiro Coffee on board. “Endiro Coffee is a big brand with a branch even in USA. Them partnering with us shows our potential as a brand on the rise and some companies are willing to walk the journey with us as we fly the Ugandan flag high,” said Ansasiira.
Uganda skipper Roger Mukasa says they are going to take it one game at a time.
“Obviously the tournament is going to be hard. But we have a good side that can deliver. We just have to listen to our coaches’ instructions and execute the set game plans. This tournament could be the turning point of our lives but we don’t want to play it with pressure.”
Before the team flies out aboard Emirates Airlines on Sunday November 4 afternoon, they will indulge in some Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) work at Mulago Hospital tomorrow November 3 where they will clean wards, visit the children’s ward, share some items/ play toys plus teach and enjoy a mini-cricket exhibition game with the kids of both the hospital and Mulago Zone.
The farewell dinner will be hosted by Endiro Coffee at their Muyenga Branch tomorrow November 3 at 5pm.
