In a close contest Baker Elonge edged his counterpart John Trust Mayeku by a single vote at the Uganda Umpires and Scorers AGM held this evening in Lugogo. The Uganda Umpires and Scorers Association is the body charged with handling the well being of umpires as well as training of all umpires and scorers in Uganda.

The association is a fully registered legal entity and has the full backing of Uganda Cricket Association. Early this year the association suffered the tragic loss of its Chairman Francis Ekalungar, the Late Ekalungar had been instrumental in the creation of the association as well as overseeing its growth.

A new executive was elected this afternoon with only Paul Oketcho returning as Vice Chairman from the previous executive, outgoing Treasurer Patrick Makumbi chose not to seek re-election so as to allow some of the young members to seek leadership in the association.

Simon Kintu was elected as Treasurer replacing Patrick Makumbi, Denis Musali was elected for the Hon Secretary position replacing John Trust Mayeku while Paul Oketcho retained his Vice Chairman position and all 3 positions were unopposed.

Voting was only required for the position of Chairman where John Trust Mayeku faced off with Baker Elonge, UCA Games Committe member Abu Mayanja the returning officer of the elections handled the process without any glitches.

Baker Elonge from the Jinja region had numbers from Jinja backing him and this worked in his favour as he was able to defeat John Trust Mayeku by a single vote, Baker was able to tally 10 votes while John Trust Mayeku got only 9 votes.

In his 1st communication to his members the new chairman Baker Elonge promised to serve and provide guidance to the growing association. The new executive mandate runs for 2 years and their immediate role is to grow the number of umpires and scorers as well develop the current crop of emerging umpires.
