By registering victories in their two opening fixtures at the on-going ICC Regional U-19 World Cup Qualifiers, Team Uganda will head into their contest against Nigeria at the University Oval in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania today with heads held high.
The sights of a ticket to the 2016 Youth World Cup in Bangladesh are clear after coach Henry Okecho’s troops produced stellar performances to defeat Botswana by seven wickets on Saturday before a 29-run win over Kenya yesterday.
“It is a perfect start for us,” Okecho spoke on phone from the team camp at the Golden Tulip Hotel yesterday. “We will continue to take one game at a time and we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves,” he said.
At the Anadil Burhani Ground, Calvin Wabwire’s parsimonious bowling got him a seven-wicket haul as the boys from Gaborone were bowled out for a paltry 75 runs in 19.3 overs.
Early dismissals for Meet Dobariya, Parvan Mahendrakumar and Zephania Arinaitwe that accounted for only seven runs briefly scared Uganda but all was well thanks to John Gabula (35*) and Abdallah Lubega’s (32*) winning 69-run fourth-wicket combo.
